My research interest has always been the understanding of complex systems, especially systems exhibiting lifelike behaviors. I have been working on modeling self-replication behaviors using cellular automata, a massively parallel computer-theoretical system introduced by John von Neumann in the 1950s. Cellular automata provide an alternative approach to computing which has generated great interest in computational science, artificial life and dynamic system modeling. I have also been doing studies on computational biology, the use of computing techniques to aid our better understanding of biological processes. I found these two fields complement of each other and are fascinating. In addition to these researches, I am also interested in programming languages, compilers, operating systems, computer graphics and user interfaces, genetic algorithms, neural networks and artificial intelligence.
